Creativity is an inherent trait of humans. Somehow, we ended up thinking of creativity in terms of the arts and entertainment but it is not limited to those areas. I think all human beings are creative; whether that is because we are responding to our passion or our needs but we create things, solutions, and stories all the time.
I often hear people say “I am not creative” but that usually happens because they are comparing themselves to someone who is able to do something they cannot. If I do not know how to paint and I use the painter’s ability to create as my unit of measurement, then of course that I will end up thinking that I am not creative.
Creativity, however, expands beyond the arts and into everyday life. For example, we use our creativity to use our spaces, to solve problems related to our areas of expertise, to play with children or with our friends, to tell stories, to make up excuses, to use our limited resources, and even to create stories in our heads when we are in conflict with someone. We, humans, are very creative.
In our spiritual journeys, we are on a path of creativity as we look at the world and our experiences and make meaning of them.
There is so much we take for granted, but if we take the time to stop, look around our space and see every object we have, the clothes we wear, the furniture we use: they were all at one point only an idea in someone’s mind. They are not natural in our world, humans created them, and we have created so much more. Pause this reading for a moment, look around you, look outside your window or go for a walk with the intention to notice how creativity has shaped our environment and our lifestyle. The natural world doesn’t make buildings, paint, cars, clothes, shoes, music, language. Humans did, humans do.
So creativity is not limited to the arts, it truly is everywhere. It is the individual’s ability to see beyond what is present and create something that was not there before.
And creativity brings joy. It is an inner force, a drive, a type of freedom and empowerment when we can finally see beyond our perceived limitations. So unleash your creativity, in whichever form in comes to you, it does not have to look like anybody else's, it cannot, because your form of creativity is unique to you, and allow yourself to bathe in the shower of joy and freedom your creativity has to offer.
